主要成就：五十年代末以来，一直从事声学与信号处理研究，60年代他主持设计了中国第一台近岸综合声呐，积极推动在声呐中采用数字信号处理新技术，70年代主持研制成波束形成计算机等。80年代主持研制潜艇综合声纳。以上研究分别获得全国科学大会奖、科学院和国家科技进步一等奖等。80至90年代，任中国科学院秘书长期间致力于科技体制改革工作，促进我国高技术产业的建立和发展。90年代中重返科研第一线，密切跟踪国际前沿技术，在我国积极倡导数字技术、宽带通信技术和信息消费电子产品。1994年在中科院声学所创办数字信号处理工程中心（DSP中心），专门从事数字消费电子产品，新型网络通信设备等技术的开发，并陆续开发出VCD, DVD, 数字电视因特网数据广播多功能机顶盒等多种产品。1997年起在国内率先倡导以宽带IP网络技术建设信息化的基础设施。1999年2月，他代表中国科学院等单位向国务院汇报实施"中国高速互联网示范工程"的建议，这一建议正式被国务院批准，成立中国网通公司进行建设和运营。侯自强近年来从事网络通信发展战略研究，发表系列论文，提出发展适合我国国情的宽带IP城域网、以太网接入网及新3G宽带无线移动互联网，推动了我国宽带网络的发展。

Mr. Ziqiang HOU is a researcher, born at Shanghai in August, 1937. He graduated from Physics Department of Peking University. He once worked as the President of the Institute of Acoustics and Deputy Secretary-general and Secretary-general of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Now he is a researcher of the Institute of Acoustics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chief Sciences Consultant of China Netcom, senior consultant of the State Administration of Radio Film and Television, and senior consultant on government information in Shanghai, Shenzhen and so on.

Main Achievements: Since the late 1950s, he has been engaged in the research of acoustics and signal processing. In the 1960s, he hosted the design of the first beach integrated sonar in China and actively drives the adoption of new digital signal processing technology to sonar. He hosted the development of beam-forming computer in the 1970s and the development of submarine integrated sonar in the 1980s. All the above researches have won the National Scientific Conference Award and Chinese Academy of Sciences’ and National Level 1 Progressional Awards respectively. From 1980s to 1990s, he worked as the secretary general of Chinese Academy of Sciences and devoted to the reform of science and technology system for a long time and drove the establishment and development of Chinese hi-tech industry. In the 1990s, he returned to the scientific front line, kept a close attention to international leading-edge technologies and fostered digital technologies, broadband communications technologies and information consumer electronics products. In 1994, he set up the Digital Signal Processing Engineering Center (DSP Center) in Chinese Academy of Sciences, devoted to the development of digital consumer electronics products and new network communication equipments and developed VCD, DVD, Digital TV, Internet Data Broadcasting, multifunctional set-top boxes and other products. In 1997, he firstly fostered infrastructures to build information with broadband IP network technologies. In February, 1999, he made a report on the proposal of Chinese High-speed Internet Demonstration Project to State Council of PRC on behalf of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The proposal was authorized by State Council of PRC, and thus built China Netcom to carry out the construction and operation. In recent years, Ziqiang Hou is engaged in the research on the strategies of network communication development and has published a series of papers, brought forward the theories on broadband IP metro access network, Ethernet access network and new 3G broadband wireless mobile Internet and drives the development of Chinese broadband network.
